Linus Pauling, one of the foremost promoters of the importance of vitamin C in the world, addressed an audience at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1993. This brief article summarizes the lecture he delivered, which explained that human beings unfortunately lost the ability to produce vitamin C themselves most likely because they were evolving in habitats rich in plant life, which supplied the vitamin in abundance. Today, most people do not live in such environments, and he attributes many of the most destructive modern diseases--such as cancer, heart disease, and (less destructive) the common cold.
